Throughout history have misused 1 Timothy 6:1-2 and others like it to advocate for slavery. As a result, Paul has been labeled a friend of the slave trader. That label has led many to discount Paul and his writings wholesale. But is that fair? Do these passages give us the right on the one hand to own slaves, or on the other hand to reject or selectively read Paul? In order to give an answer, we need to know what Paul thought about slavery, and how these passages apply today.
